NARRABI - MOREE - MUNGINDI

AUSTRALIA TELESCOPE'S............... YARRIE LAKE'S

13/06/06. Drove into Narrabri today it is a very clean town and we are staying at the Big Sky Caravan Park. Narrabri is the Cotton capital of Australia but we arrived too late in the season to see the cotton been processed. There are some interesting sight's to see out this way including the Australia Telescope where there are 6 massive Telescope's that track the universe, they are on huge railway line's that move for about 3 kilometer's in a straight line . Yarrie lakes are near the Telescope's you can camp here, the lake's are very secluded and you seem to be a Million miles from nowhere, Sandra hand fed a Kookaburra that chewed on her finger a bit. The next time that we are back this way we will stay at the Lakes, it is so peaceful and quite.
The pub's in Narrabri have good and cheap meal's the Commercial Hotel has a good selection, T-Bone steak's are only $5.00 served with chip's or salad - you can't beat that for value. Sandra also had an encounter with a Ghost? In the beer garden of this pub, whilst she was waiting for me to return with the drink's a chair next to her flipped over and gave her a fright, she was as white as a ghost herself.
The Cotton Museum in town is another good place to spend an hour or two.
Joanne has rung to say that she wants to be with San on their birthday's in July, she will be in touch before then. The weather has been great with no sign of the drought breaking just yet. 19/06/06. Packed up and drove to Moree - missed all the cotton field's in bloom - but heap's of cotton waste on the highway. We are staying at the Gwydir thermal pool's carapark out side of town. There are 4 thermal pool's ranging in temperature from 31-39 deg. The park that we are staying in has 24hr security 0n foot patrol and large flood lights light up the park after dark, you still have to be on your guard and make shore that you lock the car and van when going to the pools - very risky not to do that. The thermal pool's open at 6am and close at 10pm and if there was not much to watch on telly I would go down to the pool's and relax in the hot water with friend's that we have met, we usually get kicked out at closing time. We have met some really nice people here amongst them are Ian and Pearl Biggs who are great company - we will stay in touch, as they are going in the same direction as us.
Drove into Moree to have a look at the town and we were surprised to see a lot of the shop windows bordered up and store's empty, there are a lot of local kid's hanging about (they should be at school).
24/06/06. Sandra called into the ambulance station to have her blood pressure checked - it has gone quiet low and it was caused by the heat from the Thermal Pools, the Ambo said to only stay in for no more than 10 minutes at a time. We are now packing up to leave tomorrow and have had drinks with Ian & Pearl.
26/06/06. Stopped on the border of N.S.W. & Q.L.D at Mungindi for a coffee break in a rest area by the Barwon River, a flock of Geese were after a feed also and we had to keep a large stick close by to stop them from coming too close, this park has a plaque on a tree in memory of Major Thomas Mitchell (Sir) the famous Explorer who was the first white man to cross the river on 23rd April 1846.
