20/06/05. Today is our 13th destination stop, we are going to Elliot Heads and it is raining, we have had a lot of rain since we have hit the Queensland coast. Reversing the van onto the site has been difficult as I can't see the cement slab because of the rain, but these thing are ment to try us?.
3 days later and still raining so we have gone out to Burnett Heads with Judy and Max Moore for a Smorgasboard lunch at the Pub, and to also check out the caravan park, the meal was excellent and only $6.00 a head, good value.( the Burnett caravan park also has Brown Snakes) It is now the next day and we have been walking along the beach the tide is out a long way and there are million's of Soldier Crab's all over the beach, and a few Dolphin's swimming in the ocean and it has stopped raining " hallelujah".
24/06/05. Went into Bundy to roam around and found ourselves in a Bikie shop, I bought a Eureka Bandana (kool) and San bought a Betty Boop coin purse (oop oop a doop). Tomorrow 25th would have been Sandra's Mother's 80th Birthday (sad at all the lost years & happiness that we could of had) and the next day the 26th would have been my Mum's 86th Birthday I miss her so very Much. Today we have had a B.B.Q. with the Moore's and there son Darren his wife Julie and kid's came over from Gin Gin to spend the day with us, they all look great it, was a highlite for me to see them again.
30/06/05. It has rained again overnite but has now cleared. We have packed up the annex, etc and are now over at Judy & Max's home for a farewell dinner. Had a good night with them, sad to say goodbye but we will stay in touch. We have seen our first lot of Cane Toad's on the way back to the van, there was three of them sitting in the middle of the road we were told later that we should have run over them as they are such pest's. (Barbara back at Childers dispose's of them with a no 7 golf club.( It works).
01/07/05. We have left Elliot Heads and are now on our way to Tannum Sands near Gladstone. Max has told us of a short cut to the highway, he said that there is a bit of dirt but the road is "good" I shall ring his bloody neck, next time when we meet (only joking - he is bigger than me), the frigin road was the worst dirt road that I have been on- corrugation's,pothole's,rock's,and boulder's and whatever else, at one stage a warning sign read Slow down to 80kms I was only "dooin" about 40 clicks and was'nt about to put my bloody foot down. Fairdinkum the road? was a Nightmare, the windscreen wiper's kept coming on at ever darn pothole ( Good one Max). After arriving and setting up our rig with the temp at 28~ we are now in the park's pool, unreal swimming in July.
02/07/05. We have met a young couple who are Backpackers " Greg & Petra" they are in there 20s, Greg had once had a Boat Trawling business he seems so young for that type of work? He met Petra overseas she comes from Slovenia and they hope to marry this year, we have been for a walk along the beach and there are signs saying " Beware of Crocodiles" you swim at your own risk here, it`s a real eye opener - tide's go out so fast for a long distance you would be in " New Zealand " before you knew it.
3/7/05 - Put up the Eureka flag today, half the dill`s up this way don`t know what it stands for ? - a woman came up and said to me - how ya goin John - had me stuffed - did'nt know her from a bar of soap, she explained that she saw our sign on the caravan, that reads SANDY & JOHN - LOST IN OZ (who's the dill now ? ), she also said the same to San an she was a bit puzzled until it was explained to her - duh-.
5/7/05. Drove out to the Town of 1770 & Agnes Waters - Captain James Cook came ashore here to do some repairs to the Ship Endeavor so I guess that it was he that named this "dump " 1770" ? The tide go'es out that far that you have to strain your eye's to see the water, the caravan park is just awful no grass and it is alive with Mosquito's and Sandfly's - we had booked to come out here but we won't be returning - I cannot see why people rave about this place it look's good in the brochures as they all do -- but things aren't what they seem up this way, the snap's are taken when the tide is in and the sky is so Blue.
On the way out we have stopped at Miriam Vale for a Crab Sanga but guess wot the bloody shop is closed on Tuesdays, we went to another shop but they had no food left - so we left and went to Bororen - (strange name but after all we are in Queensland) - 1 shop 1 pub and nothing to eat, by this time Sandra was ready to scream her tits off, so I had a beer (GOOD) & San ordered a Lemon Squash (not so Good ) she said that it was like Drinking Dish Water and took it back - the next one was no better and she took it back also the Barmaid was gettin a bit Stroppy and I thought Sandy was going to jump the bar and throttle her so we shot through and I didn't wait for another beer I wasn't game enough to ask (such a Tantrum) we have travelled 207 klm's today and we are are buggered, so I'm off for a beer or ten-- Cheers--. (To bloody be continued)
6/7/05. I am now sober and ready to get back to my Blog, Greg & Petra called over and told us that they have found work in Emerald and will leave tomorrow, they have caught some Bream and said that they would bring them over for Tea, Greg cooked them in butter and garlic they were delicious. Its a pity that they are leaving as we were about to go fishing and he was going to show me the way to through a cast net they are illegal to use in N.S.W.
Next day 7/7/05 we drove into Gladstone and Bought a Waeco fridge/freezer to put all the fish in that I was about to catch, had lunch in the Gladstone Rugby Leagues Club and Joanne has rung to say that she has received the Birthday Card that we have sent she will be 39 tomorrow how time does fly.
8/7/05 (These are Sandra's word's) Our Birthday today rang Jo (Paul is on my mind also) I cryed a few tear's when on my own. I feel so sorry for Sandra on her Birthday and also at xmas time.
9th today we drove into Gladstone to look at the Botanical Gardens at Toolan I love to go to these type of place's as it remind's me of my childhood when Mum used to take Pat and I to the Sydney Botanical Gardens which she did quiet often. We have walked 6km along the millennium Way back at Tannum it is a great walk as it passes through rainforest, swamp, open grass land and top views of the Creek that runs to the Sea, and later on we drove the car up to the Roslyn Harbour Co-Op to buy some Prawns,Spotted Ray,Bug's, Scallop's and Fish Fillets for a Seafood Banquet tonight.
10th today The caravan Park has put on a free Devonshire Tea and Scone's and also handed out chocolate's to every one - great, I could not help myself and went back for seconds (Ken Adams would have been proud of Me.) On Ya Kenny Babe. Afterwoods we went for another walk with some other Nomads like us and then back to the camp for yet another Happy Hour. Boy it's a hard Life-
9th today and we drove out to Calliope to have a squiz at the Free camp spot it look's very inviting and we will camp here later on, also whilst there I saw a Brahmani Kite which is a type of Hawk I think? Catch a fish and fly to a nearby tree and eat it -- Amazing-- and we also went out to Lake Awoonga to see the van park there which is a great place to try and catch huge Barra if only I had my boat. Tomorrow we move onto Emu Park .
