14/09. Leaving Cairns this morning and traveling to Mount Molloy about 108 Km away via port Douglas, and taking our time to reach Cooktown. Mount Molloy is at the Northern end of the Atterthon Tablelands. After a nice cool night we left early for our next destination the Palmer River Roadhouse. Very hot here we have power to run fridges, fans etc, not a place to be in the Summer. Cattle are very thin with not much grass for them, they are climbing up and over rocks to get to feed. 16/09. Ben our Grandson is 18 today, happy birthday Benny. Arrived in Cooktown this morn set up camp in a very good Caravan park, and then took Sandra to see the local Dr, she has a very bad heat rash, he gave her some antibiotic's & ointment, we hope this will fix the problem. We did the tourist thing, visited the museum, shops & Cooktown Lookout, great scenery, and also picked some Mango's from the trees in town. 18/09. Went 4wd'n with Neil and Lorraine out to Endeavour Falls, 32km North West of Cooktown, it rained all last night so the roads a slippery and muddy but got to the road house OK, Jan the manager asked Sandra to feed a Barra of about 5kgs in weight, it was in a tank, she fed it with a small prawn, what an experience for her. This place also had some magnificent Cooktown Orchids, well worth seeing. we were told that up from the roadhouse a Croc was lurking in a creek, a cow and calf came down for a drink, the croc attacked and got the cow but the calf was luckier and escaped.
Leaving Endeavour Falls we drove further up the road to Hopevale a Aboriginal Community where a Rodeo was taking place, most of the contestants were aboriginal with a few white riders in attendance, we had a great time here with plenty of excitement from the events.
On the way back we had a look at Cooktowns old Cemetery, dating back to1837. A Chinese shrine to remember the forgotten Chinese folk who died in the gold fields up this way.
After a good day yesterday, we were up early and into town to buy some seafood down at the wharf from the trawler fishermen, a kilo of Banana Prawn at $15 a kilo and a live Coral Trout which was filleted by a deck hand, it weighed about 3kg for $15, in the shops up here they sell for $42 a kilo.
