Sandra & Joey at the Gorge
Aboriginal Rock art at Carnarvon Gorge.
We are now staying at Weeremba Farmstay, which is one of the best that we have stayed on, with a huge camp kitchen where the Manager cook's Damper and camp oven stew's for the Tourist's. It is a working Cattle Station that is so large that they Muster the cattle with Helicopter's and Trail bike's. It is a 7 km drive out to the back of the farm where there is a lot of rock painting's, done by Aboriginal's thousand's of year's ago & there is some really good bush walks out here.
Tomorrow we are going for a drive to see the Carnarvon Gorge. On our walk through Carnarvon National Park we came across a tour guide who had rescued a baby Wallaby, it's Mother had been killed by a car and the Joey (3 weeks old) was been reared by the guide. There are some lovely walk's in the park, one of them is a 22km round trip but we took the shorter one (7km round trip) over 8 creek crossing's and pebble bed's, up to the Moss Garden which was a sight to see.
There are a lot of Aboriginal Rock Art in the cave's nearby and the area was full of " Millionaires Palm's " as the aboriginal's called them. They used to make their Boomerang's out of the Wattle Tree, some of the seed's from those tree's were used in " Death Ceremonie's ", we then walked back down to the Ranger's Headquarters, for a B.B.Q.
On the way back to camp we stopped at a Memorial site, a Warplane had crashed in November 1943, there was a fair bit of wreckage displayed at this sight. The walk's back at Weeremba are much easier than those at Carnarvon and just as interesting.
23/07/06. We moved into Springsure and camped at the Showground, there is free camping and hot showers, "are free", opposite is a Rugby League Club and there is a Rock & Roll band playing on the back of a truck, how cool is this and all for Nix. Springsure is the oldest town in Central Queensland - first settled in the 1850s.
24/07/06. Packed up and moved to Lake Marraboon for 1 week which is on the Fairbairn Dam near Emerald. Fairbairn Dam is 3- 1/2 times the size of Sydney Harbour and is a Fisherman's Paradise with Red Claw (Cray Fish), Barramundi, Yellow belly, Bass & other speices of Native fish. There are numerious bird's in the park including Rainbow Lorikeet's, Sea Gull's, Apostle Bird's, Wedge Tail Eagle's and Brolga's in the paddock's out side of the park.
